How does STRESS effect your health?
Websters Dictionary:
- Stress is a SPECIFIC response by the body to a stimulus that INTERFERES with NORMAL physiology.
Stress is ANYTHING your body has to adapt to in order to SURVIVE.
Imagine you are walking along in the jungle and all of a sudden you see a tiger staring at you! Immediately your body sends out a slew of hormones which are causing physiological changes to prepare your body to FIGHT OR RUN! Your main goal is to

SURVIVE.
- Your body releases stress hormones from your ADRENAL GLANDS
- Your HEART RATE and BLOOD PRESSURE increase to prepare your muscles for action
- Your BLOOD GLUCOSE levels increase to supply your muscles with energy
- Your blood gets an INCREASE IN FATS to help with wound healing and hormone production
- You experience an increase in FEAR and ANXIETY
- You get a decrease in your SHORT TERM MEMORY and ABILITY TO LEARN
- You get a decrease in your SEROTONIN levels and an increase in your ADRENALINE levels
- Your body released CORTISOL which will keep you alert and decrease pain if wounded
WHAT IF YOU EXPERIENCE "RUNNING FROM THIS TIGER" FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME? (LIKE EVERYDAY)Our body
only has 1 mechanism to handle stress physically. Although we may not be getting chased by tigers anymore, our modern stressors (finances, spouse, children, work, mortgage, etc.) can cause the same exact physical response. Prolonged stress causes the above responses which leads to:
- Heart Disease / Hypertension from Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
- Digestive Problems / Muscle Pains from the blood being diverted away from our organs and to our muscles (you don't need to digest if you are being chased by a tiger!)
- Diabetes / Hypoglycemia
- Increased Cholesterol and Hardening of the Arteries
- Depression
- Insomnia and Chronic Fatigue
- Increased Pain (Fibromyalgia and Pain Syndromes)
- Decreased Immunity, Frequent Illness, Cancer
- Infertility
- Osteoporosis and Increased Aging
- Weight Gain and Sleeping Problems from Cortisol Imbalance
The above are all DISEASES OF CHRONIC STRESS, and it is no coincidence that these are the same conditions which PLAGUE OUR NATION!
We were not meant to run from the tiger everyday, for the rest of our lives!
